Hosting Your Website
You've purchased a domain name (see our post last week) and you're ready to build your website (that's where we come in) - what else do you need to do? You need to have your website hosted.
In order for a website to be accessible on the internet, the information for said website must be placed on a computer that is accessible on a world wide network (ie. the internet). This type of computer is called a web server and most individuals or businesses don't own one themselves as they can be costly and require some expertise to run and troubleshoot.
This is where web hosting companies come in. Hosting companies own the physical web server computers, store your website's information on them and publish them to the web, much like a book publisher will do for print materials. Their service fee also includes troubleshooting when the server is down (which is hopefully rare) and backup your info in the event of a crash.
