Master of Your Domain
Let's talk domains. What are they? Are they different than a website? A web address? Are there different types?
There are over 1.5 billion websites on the world wide web, so it makes sense that those sites would need their own unique identifiers. Domains are what make each website unique. They are not the same thing as a website, but rather more like the personalized label of a website. Domains are often referred to as website addresses since they are the name you type into an address bar on a web browser. This can however be a little misleading. Domain names can be registered to either or both a website or an email account, and don't necessarily need to be associated with a website.
Domain names can be registered with a variety of domain name registrars (such as GoDaddy, Bluehost or Google Domains to name few) for a nominal fee.
Domains are organized by a system called the Domain Name System (DNS) using various levels. The first is the top-level domains such as .com, .ca, .org and so on. The next levels are open to registration by the public.
These second and third level domains are the ones you create for your site. This should be chosen wisely as it will be how users find your site and should be something easily.
Next step? Build the site (that's where we come in) and get it hosted (more on hosting later)...
