What's In a Backlink?
What are backlinks are why are they important? You may have heard the terms "inbound links" or "incoming links" - they are other terms for "backlinks", which are created when one website links to another. This is not the same as "interlinking" (also important) - but we'll come back to that another time.
Backlinks are like a reference from another website. They essentially say, "this site is provides what we feel is credible content, so much so that we are willing to link our site to the info". This is a huge part of website ranking (ie. where your website shows up in search results) and ample effort should be put into increasing your inbound links.
Consider that the links you earn from other websites must be from credible sites themselves. If you have a backlink from a poorly ranked website, it is not likely to do much for your rankings either. It is worth mentioning that reciprocating a backlink will earn you points, the same as if another site reciprocates yours.
So where to start? The best way is with your competitors. Find website that ranks well for your given keywords and research their backlinks. Who do they link to, who do those sites link to and so on. Start with links to their sites, notify their admins and go from there.
Earning backlinks can be time consuming, but well worth your the effort! Not sure where to start? We can help!
